NOTRE DAME

On our way out of South Bend we stopped at Notre Dame for a look at the famous football stadium and the Golden Dome. The stadium was all locked up and it appeared we would get only a few exterior shots. Just as we were about to leave we spotted a gentleman who was doing some maintenance work. He was kind enough to let us in for a quick look around and some photos. His kindness was much appreciated.

Notre Dame Stadium opened in 1930.
The Golden Dome is visible to the left of the stadium.

The Frank Leahy Gate to the stadium.

Five of the six entry gates are named for a coach who won a national championship..

This monument to Frank Leahy sits to the right of his gate.

The Lou Holtz Gate.

The Lou Holttz monument to the left of his gate.
The famous Golden Dome covers the University's main administration building.
The Knute Rockne monument to the right of the Knute Rockne Gate.

Dan Devine's gate was the latest to be added. There's one yet to be named.

The Dan Devine monument.

These were the only ticket windows we spotted.

The surface is Kentucky bluegrass

The press box sits at the top of the stadium.
The stadium is impressive even when empty.
Much of the seating is still redwood benches (from California).

You get 18 inches of bench to sit on in the bleachers.

It was a mistake to allow this band of Irish into the stadium.

The inner wall behind the seats.

The concourse inside the gates.

The walls above the concourse display photos of legendary players.
Hmmmm....they don't seem to have one for Daryle Lamonica....

And finally, the Ara Parseghian Gate.
